Kassner attends lectures by the historian Heinrich von Treitschke. He is enthused by the world of the theater, which will become an important basis for his reflections on the role of the actor as well as for his physiognomic views. In 1896, Kassner returns to Vienna, where he completes his dissertation, entitled \u201cDer ewige Jude in der Dichtung\u201d (\u201cThe Eternal Jew In Poetry\u201d). He graduates in 1897.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1897-1898<\/strong>\u00a0Kassner resides in England (London and Oxford).<\/p>\n<p><strong>1900<\/strong>\u00a0During a sojourn in Paris, Kassner discovers C\u00e9zanne well ahead of his time. Encounter with Andr\u00e9 Gide, for whom he translates <em>Philoktet<\/em>.<br \/>\nPublication of <em>Die Mystik, die K\u00fcnstler und das Leben<\/em>. Important works on English literature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1902<\/strong>\u00a0Encounter with Hugo von Hofmannsthal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1905-1911<\/strong>\u00a0Travels in North Africa, India, Russia, Turkestan. Publishes <em>Der indische Idealismus<\/em> (<em>Indian Idealism<\/em>) and <em>Die Elemente der menschlichen Gr\u00f6\u00dfe<\/em> (<em>The Elements of Human Grandeur<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>1907<\/strong>\u00a0Encounter with Rainer Maria Rilke.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1914-1919<\/strong>\u00a0Kassner lives in Vienna, where he marries Marianne Eissler in 1914. During the war, he studies mathematics and physics. At this time, Einstein\u2019s work and foundational mathematical texts are beginning to appear. Encounter with Einstein in Vienna. Frequent excursions to Berlin, where he meets Georg Simmel, Gerhart Hauptmann, and Walter Rathenau.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1919<\/strong>\u00a0From this time on, Kassner enjoyed friendships with Charles Du Bos, Andr\u00e9 Gide and Paul Val\u00e9ry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1923<\/strong>\u00a0Kassner travels to Valais. In the course of his brief stay, he meets with his friend Rainer Maria Rilke.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1924-1931<\/strong>\u00a0Trip to Rome and the beginning of annual trips to Paris.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1938<\/strong>\u00a0Beginning of the \u201cthird creative period\u201d (in Kassner\u2019s own words), on the eve of the Second World War.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1945-1946<\/strong>\u00a0With the help of Swiss friends, Kassner settles in Sierre (Valais); he teaches at the University of Zurich.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1947<\/strong>\u00a0From September 10, 1947 until his death on April 1, 1959, Kassner resides as permanent guest in the H\u00f4tel Ch\u00e2teau Bellevue in Sierre.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1949<\/strong>\u00a0Kassner receives the Gottfried Keller Prize.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1955<\/strong>\u00a0Kassner receives the Schiller Prize in the city of Stuttgart, in particular for his work <em>Der Zauberer <\/em>(<em>The Magician<\/em>)<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>1957<\/strong>\u00a0Kassner receives an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1959<\/strong>\u00a0Rudolf Kassner dies on April 1<sup>st<\/sup> following a long illness.
